Upgraded website software for www.ildica.com
I've upgraded the software that publishes this website (and the others: www.huntsbury-preschool.org.nz, etc) to Movable Type 4.261. Mostly straight-forward, although I notice the odd apostrophe and quote mark that's been butchered during the upgrade...

Gallery updated to 2.3
I've just upgraded our photo gallery to the latest version (Gallery 2.3). It fixes some issues I had with the gallery, including the map, and it also provides support for the cool PicLens slideshow plugin (which you can access from the "View Slideshow" link in each album) for web-browsers. Here's a screensnap:

Google Earth has gone skywards
The latest version of Google Earth now includes incredible visualisation of pretty much the whole universe! Download the latest version of Google Earth and you'll notice a little planet button on the toolbar. Click this and, voila, you'll be shown the sky as it is above the location you were previously viewing in Google Earth. Start flying around and zooming in, and you'll be able to find a wealth of galactic imagery, including a lot of Hubble imagery. You can also create the usual Google Earth placemarks! For example, here's one which will take you to the Crab Nebula:Ummm, I can almost feel a telescope coming on. While Google Earth/Sky seems to be great for exploring and viewing some stunning Hubble imagery for example, I've also come across Stellarium, an open-source project which looks like it might be much better at being able to show you what is visible in the sky at any moment in time. I might load it on the laptop and use it to pick good directions for some more star trail photos...

Brilliant - online Google Maps now supports KMZ files
For example, you can now view the GPS tramping track and photos from my Kelly Range track a few weeks back online on Google Maps using this link: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=http://www.ildica.com/misc/KellyRangeTramp22-10-2006.kmz&t=hPosted by conor at 9:09 AM

Site content
The site content on the main part of www.ildica.com is now being served by a system called Movable Type, which gives me more flexibility in what we show and where on the page. To be honest, much of it is an opportunity for me to play with different software tools. ;-)
For those who are interested, here's the setup underlying www.ildica.com
- OS: FreeBSD apparently
- Webserver: Apache
- PHP: 4.4
- Blog: Movable Type
- Blog client: WBloggar
- Database: MySQL
- Gallery: Gallery 2

New Gallery software
I'm testing a new version of the photo gallery software I use here. It looks a bit more professional, and also allows me to do things like have random photos from our gallery appear on the main www.ildica.com page, and show which is the latest album to be added. All very flash, and completely free from the kind people at http://gallery.menalto.com

First post!
Today is D-Day. As in Drop-Day. Grub is due today, although is keeping remarkably quiet. Even after a large curry last night ;-)
Watch this space...
